Over-sixties advised to boost daily diet with 'good' bacteria

A group of leading food microbiologists yesterday called for wider use of probiotics, particularly among elderly people, as well as tighter rules on labelling, so that specific details are provided about the bacteria in products.

The group of scientists, led by Glen Gibson, Professor of Food Microbiology at the University of Reading, said that people should be aware of the benefits of maintaining balanced gut flora, including high levels of good bacteria. The most common types are species belonging to the lactobacillus and bifidobacillus families.

Experts believe that high-fat, low-fibre Western diets may contribute to a lack of friendly bacteria and an increase in harmful bacteria.

The gut should have a balance of 85% good bacteria and 15% bad bacteria.

WHAT IS GOOD BACTERIA?

Good bacteria come from the LACTOBACILLI family and they have been shown to have the following health benefits:

Reduce cholesterol in the blood
Reduce high blood pressure
Strengthen the immune system
Produce natural anti-bacterial agents (antibiotics)
Reduca unhealthy bacteria in the gut
Detoxify hazadous chemicals added to foods, such as nitrates to name a few

HOW TO KNOW AN EFFECTIVE PROBIOTIC PRODUCT
An effective probiotic should contain Lactobacilli bacgteria that can:

Maintain it's high and active bacterial count through processing and storage till consumption
Tolerate the acid conditions of the stomach to ensure safe passage to the intestines

Is buying a car selling out on the green dream i have?

Hello Organic People,

Today i come to you to ask you a question and to let you know the angst that my partner and i are going through as we come to the realisation we need to buy a car.

UPDATE: It has been 13 years since my partner Thomas or I have owned a car! We now own a farm that we are managing organically and we belive in a lifestyle of living green lifestyle with a low carbon foot print.

We have taken steps like buying SOLAR power for the farm and have a worm farm in out city property to lessen our landfill.

So as we continue along and wish to move to the farm on a permanent basis we realise we need to buy a car. So far we have borrowed or rented a car when driving to the farm but if we move this can not continue.

So the car we need to buy will be 4wd and a 3lt. Neither of us feel good about having to buy such a car as we are trying SO hard to live a green and clean life and feel this is a backwards step?

Study: Many Sunscreens May Be Accelerating Cancer

Only 39 of the 500 SUNSCREEN products examined by the EWG (Environmental Working Group) considered safe and effective to use!

The report cites these problems with bogus sun protection factor (SPF) numbers:

The use of the hormone-disrupting chemical oxybenzone, which penetrates the skin and enters the bloodstream.
Overstated claims about performance.
The lack of needed regulations and oversight by the Food and Drug Administration.

But the most alarming disclosure in this year's report is the finding that vitamin A and its derivatives, retinol and retinyl palmitate, may speed up the cancer that sunscreen is used to prevent.
